Blodyn Aur - The Golden Flowers of Wales

Updated: Jul 7, 2021

Blodyn Aur is the only Welsh Rapeseed Oil. Named in Welsh for the beautiful golden flowers used to make the oil, Blodyn Aur was launched in 2010 on the farm of Llyr Jones near the village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr in North Wales. Made by friends Llyr Jones, Bryn Jones and Medwyn Roberts, they make the only edible oil to be grown and produced in Wales.

Harvested in August each year, the seeds are left to mature for a month, and are then sent to the press. They have a modern oil pressing facility on Llyr’s farm, where the seeds are cold pressed and triple filtered to give it its unique taste. This is all done as sustainably as possible - Llyr’s farm produces its own electricity from a micro wind turbine and a small hydro-electric unit powered by a nearby river. Nothing goes to waste as the seeds leftover from the pressing are used to feed local cattle.

Customers keep returning to enjoy Blodyn Aur for a number of reasons. First are the health benefits. Blodyn Aur is good for health as it’s rich in omega 3 and vitamin E, with less than half the saturated fat of olive oil, so is an easy swap for those who need to keep an eye on their cholesterol. Rapeseed oil is also good for your skin, leaving it firm, glowing and nourished, so Blodyn Aur has partnered with Grounds for Good to supply rapeseed oil for their coffee body polish.

Customers also return due to the fantastic taste of Blodyn Aur. Blodyn Aur cold press their seeds as it protects and enhances the quality of the oil and helps preserve the light nutty taste with no greasy aftertaste. Blodyn Aur can also enhance the flavour of your cooking, rather than dominating it, and adds a rich golden colour to your food. Another reason that customers love it is for its versatility. Blodyn Aur has a high smoking point, which means it can be used for roasting, baking, pan-frying and stir-frying, and it’s viscosity also makes it ideal for making salad dressings and dips - the possibilities are endless! Check out their video here for a recipe for an adventurous salad dressing featuring their garlic and chilli rapeseed oils, orange juice and cinnamon!

Buying Blodyn Aur also supports a small local business. If Welsh consumers could swap half of their olive oil use for Blodyn Aur, it could create new jobs and keep money circulating in the Welsh economy.
